Those two words came together and spelt romance to almost anyone growing up in the eighties, maybe even the nineties. When the music changed and you heard that familiar saxophone riff, your feet changed rhythm, “I feel so unsure…” sang a husky, vulnerable voice… it was time for the slow dance. Remember?

Just two words that were part of an unforgettable chorus. “Time can never mend / The careless whispers of a good friend.” A song about loss, about cheating, about guilt; not about sweet love at all, yet oh what tenderness.

The singer of that lovely song died yesterday. We woke up to the news this morning. George Michael, Georgios Kyracos Panayiotou, so many of us are humming your songs today.

“As the music dies

Something in your eyes…

Calls to mind a silver screen

And all its sad goodbyes”
